Its mass is estimated to be 3.5 times that of the sun. NGC 1999 is around 1,350 light-years from Earth and lies near the Orion Nebula, the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. This star is cataloged as V380 Orionis, and its white color is due to its high surface temperature of about 10,000 degrees Celsius, nearly twice that of our own sun. This peculiar portrait from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope showcases NGC 1999, a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion. Reflection nebulae may also be the site of star formation. Reflection nebulae and emission nebulae are usually seen together and sometimes are called 'diffuse nebulae'. Reflection nebulae are usually blue because the scattering works better for blue light than red (this is the same reason that the sky is blue and sunsets are red). The light from the nearby stars is not hot enough to ionize the gas of the nebula to make an emission nebula. The Witch Head reflection nebula (IC2118), about 1000 light years from Earth, is caused by the bright star Rigel in the constellation Orion. M78 is classified as a reflection nebula because the dust particles are reflecting starlight from the intensely hot, young stars beneath it.
